With Halloween coming up this week, it got me thinking….

Why is it that just about every Holiday or gathering is synonymous with candy and sweets?

Halloween candy, Christmas cookies, Valentines Day chocolates, Easter baskets filled with sweet treats, Birthday cake, Anniversary cakes, Office party sweets, Retirement party cake, Wedding cake, Baby shower cake and other sweets, doughnuts and pastries at office meetings, candy jars at co-worker’s desks…..and on and on and on….it seems we as a society cant go long without our sweets!

What’s so bad about that?

Well, nothing really. As long as the sweets are minimized, portion controlled, and balanced with healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Our bodies were not designed to run on processed sugar, but our country seems to be addicted to the stuff. In the last 3 decades, sugar consumption has increased by 30%! All that added sugar has lead to increased waistlines in America and increased obesity related health conditions in this country.

Its time to take control of the mindless decisions we make through the day. The saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” is so true when it comes to healthy eating. Instead of heading to the vending machine at 3:00 for an afternoon candy bar pick me up, plan ahead and bring a healthy snack with you! An apple with peanut butter or cut up veggies with Vegy Vida®!

A healthy snack provides nutrition your body needs with the sustained energy you need to get through the rest of your day without the sugar crash that always comes after the initial energy boost of a sugary snack. You will feel better about your healthy choice and your body will thank you! Who knows, you may even have the energy to go for a walk after work! BONUS!
